Retail Shelf Planner 2011 - Usability

One of the most important focus points in developing the 2011 release was to keep the software as easy to use as possible. Usability and simplicity were the key guidlines when designing the new functionality, but also existing functionality was reviewed to see if we could improve on that. Thanks to feedback from users we've been able to apply various changes that will make working with Retail Shelf Planner even more efficient than it already was.

Planogram Creation/Maintenance

The Shelves dialog was one of those areas. To ease the creation and maintenance of the fixtures, we've applied the following changes:

  • The list with fixtures can now be sorted ascending or descending on Y-coordinate. You change the sort-order to click the column-heading of the Y-coord. A + (ascending) or - (descending) tells you which way the sort will be. The selected sort-order is saved when closing the dialog and will be used automatically next time the dialog is opened.
  • From now on it's very simple to quickly create a planogram with shelves in multiple segments. Using the "Copy Shelves" button you can immediately copy all fixtures in the selected segment to another segment. Optionally, Retail Shelf Planner will also name the new fixtures in a logical way. Creating a section has never been this quick and easy!
  • It is advisable to name fixtures in a logical manner for useful reports and more efficiency during the placement of products. This can now be done with a single click! You prefer the numbering to be top-down? Simply sort the list of fixtures in descending order, and click the "Renumber Shelves" button. It's as simple as that!

Allocating Products

Another area where, partly based on user-feedback, we saw room for improvements is the Allocate Products dialog.

  • It's now possible to resize the dialog in width, allowing more space for the available and selected product-lists.
  • The columns in the available products list can now be resized or hidden. This way long product names can be displayed completely.
  • Just like with facings, you can change the capping and orientation in the selected products list. (Select one or more products and bring up the menu using a right-mouse click.)
  • The filter-option has been extended with the product-fields Desc 1-5 and Data 1-5. If you have relabelled these fields through the Tools-Options dialog, Retail Shelf Planner will display the new name in the list.
  • All selected settings (dialog size, columns, filters, etc.) are saved when closing the dialog, and reused next time the dialog is opened.

Planogram Display

The display and "behavior" of the planogram has been changed to make working with large planograms and/or small products more efficient:

  • The planogram is automatically "scaled" and centered on the screen based on all components, not just the section-dimensions. InfoBoxes left, right, above or below the section, as well as shelves and positions that extend the section are now taken into consideration for the scaling.
  • When you're zoomed-in it has become easier to move a position to a location that is outside your screen. Simply start dragging the product, and as soon as you get close to the edge of the screen, the planogram will start scrolling automatically.
  • The coordinates of the cursor-location are now displayed in the status bar even if you're outside the section. This way you can quickly see the how far products are sticking out, or where InfoBoxes are located.

Miscellaneous

Various other features will make the creation and maintenance of planograms more efficient:

  • Using the Product-list it's possible to find and change product information inside Retail Shelf Planner, even when the product is not allocated yet. Using various filters (all products, (un)allocated products, products with missing dimensions) you can adapt your view on the product-data. Columns can be locked, sort-order changed, etc. The Product-list is accessible through the menu's and a toolbar-button.
  • The InfoBox-list provides an overview of all InfoBoxes in the active planogram. With a double-click you open the InfoBox-dialog with the details of the selected InfoBox, allowing quick access and changes. The InfoBox-list is accessible through the menu's.
  • The short-keystroke Ctrl-B for display in Blocks complements the short-keystrokes Ctrl-U (for display in units) and Ctrl-L (for display in Live Images).
